Win 10 is basically 7+ or an excuse for everyone on 8.x to escape of 8.x.

Don’t do it. First adopters always get screwed.

10 will be an incremental upgrade. I’d say go for it. Haven’t seen too many UI/UX improvements other than the improved start menu, but I’m sure there will be some performance improvements.

I’ve been running Win10 for a while as part of their testing and it’s pretty solid, but I would still wait just a bit. Besides, I’m guessing what your laptop is really telling you is that you can kind of pre-load Win10. It won’t actually install until the end of the month when it’s released to manufacture. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/…

I’m one of those people that think Windows 10 will be a conspiracy to make Windows and its programs into a subscription-based system and they’ll charge us per month to use it after a certain period of time.

I’ll probably upgrade as I am running Win7 as well, but I am probably going to wait and see how the incremental updates go before I also dive in. I want to make sure all my programs and whatnot will carry over 100% perfectly.

It’s been blabbing at me about that for quite a while now.
I’m honestly just going to stick with 7 even though the upgrade period does expire and at some point it will cost money. I’d rather stay with something I’m comfortable with using than switching to the first version of something else. Even if Windows 10 is good, I really don’t want anything like Windows 8, because that was some shit and everybody knows it.
Also, what happened to Windows 9?

You should have updated to 8.1.
Here is a short list of significant things that 8.1 has that 7 does not, though you might need to check the versions (Pro vs Home).
1. One-button search (and a much improved search algorithm over windows 7)
2. Bitlocker file encryption to password-protect folders or hard drives
3. Mobile Hotspot (use your PC as a source of wifi)
4. Native fingerprint scanner support
5. Much more improved windows defender, to the point where you don’t need antivirus anymore.
6. Improved task manager and resource monitor
7. Built in installation reset (lets you do a clean install/reset but keep your files and preferences in case you accidentally get a virus or mess up the installation somehow, no need to take it to a repair shop)
8. No third party programs needed for ISOs
9. Native cloud storage (Skydrive)
10. 3G/4G support
11. Windows to Go (lets you install your copy of windows via USB, no disk needed)
12. Native USB 3.0 support (much, much faster USB file transfers, without requiring an additional driver/third party software. Absolutely critical if you have an external hard drive and move large files).
Here’s some major new features unique to windows 10:
1. Cortana (from windows phone) supported on all devices. Think Desktop Siri.
2. Project Spartan/Edge browser (this might be a huge success or a major flop, not sure. We’ll find out in a month.)
3. Multiple desktop configurations you can switch between
4. Scheduled updates and restarts . Instead of forced ones. Finally.
5. Integration with Windows Phone and Xbox One. The same applications (like Word) on the same interface on different devices, so you don’t have to relearn new interfaces for new devices. They will also share user preferences, history, cloud storage, etc. Similar to how Google accounts work across gmail, youtube, and other things, but with more powerful native applications (not web-based ones).
6. Native facial recognition, retina scanner,
7. Native DirectX12 (improved 3D rendering for games)

8.1 was 7+, 10 is it’s own thing, it’s all about integration with hardware and different device standards, aka, windows phone and xbox.

Also, your laptop specs don’t matter. Windows 10 uses fewer resources than windows 8, which uses fewer than windows 7. They’re getting leaner and faster with each new update, so it should actually run better on older hardware.

The update is automatic and shouldn’t mess with your files, but copying them to another place where they will be safe is never a bad idea.

8 and 8.1 are very different in terms of design. 8.1 works basically like windows 7.

8.1 basically kept all the touch mode stuff from 8, but added most of 7’s desktop features back in, like booting to the desktop, search from the start menu, and disabling the “charms” bar and stuff.

I doubt it’s the actual update (it only just hit RTM), just your chance to “reserve” a space in line when the update seeds.
Do it. It's marvelous. 7 feels dated compared to 8/8.1, and even more so compared to 10.

“That was some shit and everybody knows it” I’ve been happily using Win8 since it came out. It’s wonderful and the haters just can’t stand anything different. I have literally not once missed 7. Also, whoever made this meme has no idea what it’s supposed to be.
And apparently a lot of coders back in the day would check to see if you were running an old version of windows by searching for “Windows 9x” or in other words, if the version started with a 9. Thus, naming it windows 9 would cause a lot of problems with that. That’s the claim, at least. Microsoft is actually pretty focused on maintaining software compatibility through versions.

Bitlocker is appears to be only on 8.1 Pro. It definitely isn’t part of base Win 8.1, though it may be available as an add-on without buying the upgrade to Pro.

I’ve been running 8.1 since I bought a new laptop about 4 months ago. I like it, though there are a few quirks that I find slightly annoying.
- You have to right click on the “start button” to pull up a truncated start menu to do things like shut down. Left clicking switches to Metro view and that sucks for non-touch systems.
- Adding desktop shortcuts is a PITA if you didn’t specify to add a desktop shortcut when it installed since there isn’t a true start menu. There may be a quicker, easier way to do it but the few times I had to manually add desktop shortcuts required searching through file folders to find the program launch file so I could put the shortcut on the desktop.
From what I gather Windows 10 brings back the true start menu and has significant improvements behind the scenes in terms of resource usage and security. It sounds like it takes the best bits of the Win 7 and Win 8.1 OS’es and puts them into one package.
Based on everything that I’ve seen, I would recommend upgrading. If you are concerned about launch day bugs and whatnot it may be worth it to you to wait a few weeks or a month before doing the upgrade. The upgrade is free for a year from the launch date, so there isn’t really huge pressure to upgrade right away.
